June 14, 2018 –
As many of you know, I run a photography business. What you may not know is that I am also working as a dental assistant at the same time. I always knew that eventually I would want to be my own boss and work for myself but I just never knew when it was the right time to make the jump from a steady paycheck to being self employed.
Its scary. I don’t want to be homeless! My budget might change! What if it doesn’t work out!!!
….but also, what if it DOES work out and I can’t handle it?
Lately this has been my life. The workload of the two jobs together has been a bit of a toll and I decided I can only choose one. SO, I had to decide which one I liked more. You’d think that would be easy but a lot plays into it. I liked the money and consistency of dental assisting but I loved everything about photography. I decided that NOW is the time to follow my passion. I CHOSE PHOTOGRAPHY!
I’m not typically one to burn my bridges, so instead I burnt my britches! Here is a pictures of me doing an honorary burning of my scrubs that are very saturated in spit that belongs to a lot of other people. #LifeInADentalOffice AMMIRIGHT?!
So with that being said, I put in my two weeks, two weeks ago! Today was my last day! Doing that was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I was so nervous that I threw up the day I decided I was gonna do it and then again at lunch right before I turned in my resignation letter.
At first my mind set was “Well, now is the time to do something crazy. I don’t have kids yet and my monthly income doesn’t have to be huge. If it doesn’t work out then I can always go back to my old job”.
Now that I’ve had some time to accept that my new life is completely based off of how hard I work, IM PUMPED! I’ve never felt so alive. I needed this!!!
How did I really decided that this is what I wanted??? I was shooting a wedding and I paused, looked around and wanted to start bawling. A flash back began of every single shoot I’ve ever done. As the memories started playing, I was overwhelmed with emotion. The events I was capturing for these sweet couples and families all contained so much love. And I got to be a part of that! The sweetest thought popped into my head. “You worked so hard for this. This is your life.. enjoy it.” The music started to play as the bride walked down the aisle and I felt like I was in a fairy tale. And then I remembered that this is how I feel every time I work with my bride and grooms. Being a part of such a magical event feels just like how it sounds- magic.
You know in Aquamarine when Hailey says, “Love is the closest thing we have to magic”. I FELT THAT! I’ve been feeling that ever since I got into photography and got to capture those loving moments for people that they want to remember forever!
The fear is slowly dissipating and excitement and joy is growing every second!
This decision has been a real test of faith, but I know that Heavenly Father has a plan for all the promptings that I’ve been given. This feels right. I don’t have much of a plan but I don’t need a giant plan, I just need to know my next step. Not the next twenty. This has been a real life experience of acting on faith the size of a mustard seed. I didn’t get a ton of confirmations that this is my purpose in life but perhaps we don’t get all the answers and confirmations we seek because God loves seeing us grow.
