A few weeks ago we got a PUPPY! She sure has brought a lot of spunk to our lives to say the least!
For literally MONTHS we had been searching for a dog. When the search began we were living in a small 1 bed room apartment on the 2nd floor. We loved our little home but it unfortunately didnt allow animals. We wanted a dog SOOOOOO badly! That factor lead us to move!
We knew it would be a while before we could afford a house and it was likely we would need a dog that was okay with being inside but we also wanted a dog that would like going hiking with us! We wanted a medium/large sized dog that didnt shed, didnt bark very much and that was super good with kids. We actually weren’t looking for a dog, we were looking for a unicorn.
After some research (aka tons of “what type of dog is best for you” quizzes on buzzfeed) we found cute little golden doodles! We looked at pictures of golden doodle puppies for days and decided that we wanted a girl and she had to be black! (Again.. another thing to add to the list thus making our search IMPOSSIBLE!)
We looked and looked for SOOOO LONG! I was getting super discouraged because I wanted a little buddy so stinking bad! One night I happened to be googling black golden doodle girl puppies at 10 pm (ya know… the usual. I know you guys do that too, dont lie) AND I FOUND OUR PERFECT PUPPY!
She was so cute! It just so happened that she was the last in her litter, and was located in the same town in Utah that I would be shooting a wedding at a week later! Within 30 mins of finding her online, we had bought her and were making arrangements to pick her up the following week!
I dont know how many of you know this but Austin and i’s birthdays are only a day apart. His is Feb 19th and mine is Feb 21st. Guess who’s birthday is also Feb 21st?! OUR PUPPY’S! Is that not a sign or what?! You best believe we are going to have a big party for it next year!
You guys. I WAS SO EXCITED! I couldn’t contain it! Austin and I were about to add the little furry family member that out kids were going to grow up with and have memories with as their family dog! Finding her was a tender mercy!
Neither Austin or I had ever had a puppy before.. or younger siblings… or really been exposed to babies very much for that matter so getting a puppy with a little intimidating! We spent the following week puppy proofing the house and buying her 100000 toys and different types of treats on amazon. She is the worlds most spoiled dog.
That week dragged on FOREVER! I WANTED OUR PUPPY! But finally, the day came to pick her up! I was shaking because I was so excited!
We went to the house that she was at and met the breeders. They went back to get our puppy and let us meet the puppy’s parents! Out of no where, a little black ball of fur rushed by us! Followed by two big blonde dogs! I could already tell that this little puppy had A LOT OF ENERGY!
Our puppy’s mom is a small/meduim sized golden retriever and her Dad is a BIG poodle! Annnnnnd they are both sooooo blonde! Somehow they had a tiny black dog!
After signing some papers we took our little puppy in the car to go home with us. We knew right away what we wanted to name her- Harlow <3 She did so well as we drove away! She didnt cry at all, she was just super happy! Which is how she is most of the time! However, I on the other hand, BAWLED MY EYES OUT! I couldn’t believe that she was here- in my ARMS!!! She was so cute! The moment took me by surprise and I lost it! I was SOOOO HAPPY!
The 6 hour car ride home went okay. She got a little sick (which was expected) but we gave her some puppy medicine that would help calm her nerves as we traveled and it worked like a charm!
Since that day is been about a month. She has grown so much already! She loves treats, walks and her stuffed animal Herold the hedgehog. She can’t sleep without it!
Remember when I said she is the most spoiled dog ever? Well yeah.. it gets worse. She had a hard time sleeping the first few weeks and both Austin and I were slowly losing our minds due to lack of sleep. Then we discovered what was keeping her up- she got hot at night! So now instead of sleeping in her kennel with lots of blankets, she’s sleeping in the bathroom in our room with a fan directly blowing on her. But wait, its gets better. On one of her “late night energy bursts” Austin took her outside (it was about 1 am). Harlow would take a few steps into the dark and then freak out. Long story short, after some testing we found out she is scared of the dark. SOOOOO, she also sleeps with a night light hahah.
Potty training is slowly getting better. She’s still learning though. It makes it especially hard to train her when we dont have a yard. Instead we share a patch of grass with 30 other people in our apartment complex. I dream of having a yard someday haha.
She’s super smart which is a good and bad thing! She is literally any escape artist. We can’t figure out how she gets out of every barrier/cage! We set up a gate in our downstairs bathroom for her to stay in while we are at work but everyday when we came home, shed be happily waiting for us at the front door surrounded by a chewed on mess. We set up our go pro camera towatch how shew as getting out. SHE LITERALLY CROWLED OVER IT! Little daredevil.
She’s learning lots of tricks! So far she has mastered “sit”! We are working on getting her comfortable while walking on a leash but she’s still a little crazy!
She eats like she’s been starved all day! When we first got her, she did not eat well. Turns out she is just picky. Since then, we got her a little yummier dry food that I add some warm water to so she can chew it easier. When she has been really good ill mix in some wet food from a can and she goes crazy over it! The girl likes to eat!
Although sometimes she can be a real stinker that makes me wanna go crazy, she’s so fun! We needed her little spirit in our house! She keeps things interesting and always has us laughing!
When we get ready for bed, sometimes she turns into a little raptor. She likes chewing on our hands and feet! She doesn’t do it to be mean, she just wants to play but its still scary. We are working on teaching her that thats not okay but she’s still so little that you can only do so much. Anyways- she turns into a raptor at night. The only way to be safe is to get your whole body under the blankets so she can’t bite you. Sometimes Austin and I are on the same team and hide together but every once in a while one of us will betray the other and stick Harlow under the blankets with the other person and not let them out and slowly get chewed to death We have a fun relationship hahahahaha.
She has a fun relationship with both Austin and I! When she wants to play and be crazy, she goes to Austin. When she needs snuggling or just got in trouble, she comes to me. This is probably what it will be like when we have kids hahah.
Getting Harlow before we started out family has been the best decision ever! I’ve already learned so much more about Austin and vice versa.
Although she’s not a person and still very much a dog, its crazy to think about the fact that we are her family now. We are the ones she relies on and thinks about. She is very much obsessed with us and I love it (even though a second to myself would be nice everyone and while) hahah. Until we have kids, she’s our baby. And even when we do have kids, I dont plan on giving her any less attention! She’s 110% meant to be in our family!
We love our Harlow girl!
